So much for when you're ready and the time is right!  Some company that you'd never heard of appeared out of the blue, with a big announcement about a technology breakthrough that they claimed was light years ahead!  They got huge media coverage all over the world, and within a few weeks customers were starting to make anxious noises about needing to switch suppliers if you couldn't keep current with the cleanest and most efficient technologies.  Fortunately your team had looked at the so called breakthrough technology really thoroughly eighteen months ago, and had found some serious limitations when it was used in volume production. Even more fortunately, they were well down the track of combining it with another alternative, to produce a hybrid which is much more robust.  You hadn't planned to put it into production this year, but the upstart company actually had plenty of capacity and was more than happy to enter into a joint venture to get it to the market, given the failure of their original plan.  So everybody wins - your shareholders, their shareholders, and of course all of the customers.  And who knows what the next big thing could be for the joint venture?
